Some very important questions worth considering when you get here:

. Do you need to be living near a medical facility or a pharmacy?

• Do you want ready access to grocery stores, or restaurants?
  
• Will you need a phone, internet connection, or trash pick-up?
  
• How familiar are you with the metric system? Hectares as opposed to an acre for instance?
  
• Homes here are on a septic system unless they are in or near a city.
  
• If you have a pension do you know how you will be able to deposit it in a bank in Costa Rica?
  
• Do you know a wire transfer to a bank here can take as long as a month?
  
• If you wire transfer more than $10,000 to a bank here you will have to have a way of documenting the source of the funds?
  
• Costa Rica is now tied in with the US IRS.

As a Permanent Resident of Costa Rica, it has been necessary for us to understand how things work down here. It can be difficult if not impossible at times.

There will come a time if you live here, or are a visitor for an extended stay, you may be required to do something mandatory. You may have to go to a certain office and stand in line for hours only to be told that you are in the wrong line or at the wrong office. You will have to repeat the process and hope you have the right office and line this time.

You will find that dealing with the bureaucracy, or the people in general isn’t that easy. You will need someone who can show you how to get around and who understands Spanish. The average person on the street will not be able to help you.

Buying Real Estate is one of the most difficult processes here and it can be tricky.
